Re: where are you?

I made it to Yellowknife ok... about two and a half or three tanks of
gas... the campsite is well serviced... but on the weekends it's
sometimes hard to get a good spot as the locals grab them to "camp
out".... First three nights were at a "tent, no electricity" site #
75 for $15 / night... last night I moved to a "Tent with electricity"
site #14 for $20 / night... my iPod needed charging and the weather
report said chance of snow with temps near 0š C.... I bought a little
ceramic electric heater for about $40 to keep me warm... worked
fine.. the "camper" sleeps well.. I'll do pics...

I am using a mosquito net over the tailgate and open window at the
back of the truck to make the fourth wall of the tent... Canadian
Tire had some great clamps that hold it in place well...

I've use the eye-bolts that I put in the truck's canopy to run a
fairly strong rope line from one bolt to the other... this gives me
lots of places to hang things to dry... should I need them.. helps
keep the tension good for the curtains over the windows too... as
that same line is used as the curtain rods for both windows...

I've not yet taken pictures of the "camper" or sites.. or any here in
YK for that matter... I'm keeping my eyes open for the "world's
largest 'copter" to get a shot of that.. lots of nice planes at the
air port... will try for some nice pics of the....

Had a good meeting with the fellow I came to see at News North... he
offered me the second job (housing included) in Inuvik... but after
having pointed out that I was not a writer ("Good thing to know" he
said)...and offering me the job again... said that he would talk to
me again on Wednesday...

So I am visiting other establishments in town to see how things go
with them.. I have a few ideas...

Am access the internet for free at the library... just above the
shopping mall where Trevor is the manager of the Bootlegger store...

He needs to move out of the place where he's staying and VERY
interested in sharing... that'd be fun.... ! ! ! !

If a girl friend moves in... she'll have to pay her share too... no
freeloaders...!!! ! !

Seem he's about to acquire another car...

I got some nice pictures of buffalo with calves on the way in... just
after the ferry... I will try and get those up online and then the
next batch will be the tent sites...

That's it for now...

Interested in gaining practical journalism experience in the U.S.?

The International Journalism Exchange is now accepting applications
until June 1.

The International Center for Journalists' International Journalism
Exchange will bring 10 young newspaper editors with at least five
years' experience from the developing world to the United States
from October 7 to November 11.

Participants will spend a week in Washington, D.C. where they will get
to meet editors at major U.S. newspapers and learn about journalism in
the capital. Then, they will head out to different parts of the country
to work at a newspaper with about the same size circulation as the
newspaper they left in their home country. There, the editors will spend
one month learning about the cultural and professional aspects of
reporting for a community paper in the U.S. The program ends with a
two-day event in New York where, in addition to touring the city and
visiting media organizations, participants will get to visit the
country's most prestigious newspaper, the New York Times.

For more information and applications, contact Program Officer Dawn
Wohlfarth at the International Center for Journalists, at ije@icfj.org

Dear CESO VAs in the Northwest Territories,

I thought you might want to know about a special, upcoming event in
the Northwest Territories. CESO VA George Lessard is presenting a
slideshow of some of the photos (with music) from his recent trip to
the Bolivian Altiplano (highlands) at the Northern Life Museum, Fort
Smith, NT, on Friday, February 24, at 7pm.

George was recently sent to Bolivia on a CESO assignment. Included in
the slideshow are pictures of the cities of La Paz, and El Alto; Lake
Titicaca, and the temples of Tiahuanaco. CESO is proud to be
associated with George's work overseas. We hope that you can attend
the exhibit if you live in the Fort Smith area or will be visiting
the area on the date of the exhibit. Also, please forward this
message to anyone in the Fort Smith area you think would be

The Morales Victory and Bolivian Social Movements

The Morales Victory and Bolivian Social Movements
by Alexander Dwinell
[full text at]

[excerpt]

News from Bolivia indicates that Evo Morales of the MAS party (Movimiento Al Socialismo; Movement Toward Socialism) has been elected that country's new president. This election is, among many other things, a further referendum on and rejection of the neoliberal policies that have dominated and impoverished Bolivia.

There is already much debate within the strong Bolivian social movements over how Evo Morales and the MAS will respond to this mandate. Oscar Olivera, who with the Coordinadora in 2000 led a successful opposition to water privatization in Cochabamba and has advanced the call for a Constituent Assembly, is but one of many who raise such questions. As Olivera reportedly told The Guardian (UK), "There's been a loss of confidence in him [Morales]. I'll vote for him, but it's a critical support."

A December 2005 interview in Green Left Weekly makes Olivera's position clearer: "No matter which way you look at it, the elections are not the solution for meeting the demands of the population. However, elections are a space that has presented itself and which we, as autonomous social movements, are taking up in order to accumulate forces to pass over this bridge, towards these two grand demands [nationalization of hydrocarbons and the Constituent Assembly]. Obviously, it interests us, within the rules of this game established by the bourgeoisie, for Evo Morales to enter into government. This would make it less difficult to transition towards the two objectives that the people have put forward."
